Claude Code Appears to Be Removed from the $20 Pro Plan

Claude Code is showing a new message to some Claude Pro users:

"Buy credits to get started"

The message explains that credits are consumed through API and Console usage, even when the user already has a Claude Pro subscription.

This is not appearing after the normal Pro usage allowance has been exhausted.

In my case, the Claude Pro subscription is active and the plan usage limit has not been reached. Claude Code is still directing the account toward purchasing separate credits.

That suggests Anthropic may be changing how Claude Code access works on its $20 Pro plan.

What Changed?

Until now, Claude Pro users could sign into Claude Code using their paid Claude account.

The $20 monthly subscription provided access to Claude Chat and Claude Code under shared plan usage limits.

Anthropic’s official support documentation still describes Claude Code as part of the Pro and Max subscriptions. Its Pro plan page also continues to list Claude Code access as a key benefit.

However, the experience appearing inside Claude Code tells a different story.

Instead of using the remaining Pro allowance, the user is asked to purchase credits for API and Console usage.

This is important because subscription usage and API credits are billed separately.

This Is Not a Usage Limit Issue

There is an existing feature that allows paid users to purchase additional credits after exhausting their subscription limits.

That system is documented by Anthropic as a way to continue working after the plan allowance has been used.

But that explanation does not apply when:

• The Pro subscription is active

• The included usage limit has not been reached

• Claude Code still requests separately purchased credits

In that situation, the product is not simply offering additional usage. It is preventing the user from accessing Claude Code through the remaining Pro allowance.

Pro and API Credits Are Separate

Anthropic treats Claude subscriptions and its developer platform as separate billing systems.

Claude Pro covers the consumer Claude subscription. API and Console usage are paid through usage-based credits. Anthropic confirms that having a paid Claude subscription does not automatically include general API or Console credits.

That separation has always existed

The new concern is that Claude Code appears to be directing Pro subscribers into the API credit system even though Claude Code is publicly advertised as part of Pro.

For developers, this could turn a predictable $20 monthly tool into a subscription plus usage-based billing product.

Anthropic Has Tested This Before

This is not the first time Claude Code access on Pro has become uncertain.

In April 2026, Anthropic temporarily removed Claude Code from the Pro tier for a small percentage of new users. The company described it as a pricing experiment affecting about 2 percent of new signups and later restored the public plan details after strong criticism.

At the time, many users were concerned that Claude Code would eventually become exclusive to the more expensive Max plans or move toward token-based billing.

The latest credit prompt suggests Anthropic may be testing that direction again, or beginning a wider rollout before publishing an official announcement.

Why This Matters

Many developers selected Claude Pro mainly because it included Claude Code.

They accepted the usage limits because the pricing was simple:

Pay $20 per month and use Claude Code within the included allowance.

Requiring credits changes that arrangement.

A developer may now need to pay:

1. The monthly Claude Pro subscription

2. Additional usage credits for Claude Code

3. Potentially standard API rates after those credits are consumed

This makes monthly costs harder to predict, especially when Claude Code is working across large repositories and using significant context.

The issue is not that advanced AI tools cost money. Running coding agents is expensive.

The issue is changing the practical value of an existing paid plan without clearly communicating the change first.

The Documentation Still Says Claude Code Is Included

As of July 24, 2026, Anthropic’s public support pages still say that Pro and Max plans provide Claude Code access through a unified subscription.

The Pro plan documentation also explicitly lists Claude Code access among its key benefits.

This creates a direct conflict:

The documentation says Claude Code is included.

The live product tells an active Pro subscriber to buy separate credits.

Anthropic needs to clarify whether this is:

• A temporary technical issue

• A limited pricing experiment

• A regional rollout

• A change affecting only new subscriptions

• Or the beginning of Claude Code’s removal from Pro

Until Anthropic provides that clarification, Pro users should check their Claude Code access before renewing based solely on the features currently listed on the pricing page.

What Pro Users Should Check

Open Claude Code and confirm whether it continues using your subscription allowance.

Also check your Claude account’s usage section to confirm that your plan limit has not already been reached.

When Claude Code asks for credits despite remaining Pro usage, take screenshots showing:

• Your active subscription

• Your remaining usage

• The credit purchase message

• The date and time

• Your account region, without exposing private information

This will help separate actual pricing changes from authentication errors or account-specific bugs.

It is also worth contacting Anthropic support and asking one direct question:

“Is Claude Code still included with the $20 Pro subscription when the account has remaining plan usage?”

Final Thoughts

Claude Code appears to be moving away from simple access through the $20 Pro subscription, at least for some users.

There is not yet enough public information to confirm whether every Pro account is affected. Anthropic’s official documentation has also not been updated to reflect the experience currently appearing inside Claude Code.

But this should not be dismissed as users simply reaching their limits.

When an active subscriber with remaining Pro usage is told to purchase separate API credits, something has changed.

Anthropic now needs to explain exactly what Pro users are paying for.
